Here is another summer wedding post... it's always so busy in wedding season! No time to post until winter! This wedding, as you will see, was full of fun loving energy. I had the hardest time editing down for this post. So many great moments... Conor and Emily had a beautiful ceremony right on the ocean on Fidalgo Island, Anacortes and the reception a mile away at a local venue. So much color and happiness...

Camp Themed wedding on Orcas Island

This wedding was reslaxed and fun, beautiful and very unique. The theme was camping complete with bean-bag tossing, log-fire wedding cake and marshmallow's on sticks. Patrick and Lisa choose Red Rabbit Farms on Orcas Island (www.redrabbitfarm.com) which included catering - yummy. They had beautiful wood block prints for decorations and seating cards, as well as, japanese style umbrellas for the ladies to shield themselves from the sun.

This wedding could have won the most gorgeous wedding award. Very Pacific Northwest. The ceremony took place at Lake Cresent Lodge and the reception on the Pacific Ocean on the Olympic Peninsula. Breath taking, yes. Fun? Hell yes! Just fabulous, warm, lovely people. Organized by the amazing Alison Lum of Alison Lum Events... Check it...

Thanks again to everyone that made it down for our annual Halloween photos. What fun. All those cute faces. We are estimating 1,000 kids in 3 hours; 775 people in our photos! It was wild. There are some photos of the KP Studios team at the end of this post.

We had a wonderful "Friends" high school senior portrait session with Nicole Baumann and Tyler Thompson on Thursday. Tyler's images will come later this week, but thought I'd share a few of the images from Nicole's part of the afternoon. I had so much fun with Nicole! She had the awesome shoes - totally rad - but I got so side tracked with photographing her beautiful face it was hard for me to remember all the fabulous shoes!

How adorable is little miss Tulip?! I just adore these images, and her sweet smile!

The next series is so special. Whenever Peter or Lisa has a session with a little baby, they often try to include a few images of mom and dad, too. It is such an amazing way to capture the bond and the special connection between parents and their new little one. I think these images just perfectly capture the incredible love of this precious family.

We started photographing the DeLaBarre's when Mary Jane was in her Mama's belly. They are a Navy family that has recently been living in Hawaii and are now off to North Carolina. Whenever they are in Seattle, visiting their Grandma Mary, they either come up to Anacortes or we meet them in Seattle for a photoshoot. Here we are at the Arboretum in Seattle.

Here was Sarah's reaction to her photoshoot this year. Very nice to hear since this was my first shoot in two months! It's wonderful to be back photographing again...

OMG Lisa!  You are absolutely amazing, talented, and worldly wonderful!  

Once again you have out done yourself.  I don't know how you do it again and again ... but you always seem to capture the kids personalities in their photos.  We've had other pictures done, I've taken some myself.  Yours however, are always the ipidomie of perfection in capturing thier absolute perfect expresions and personalities!  I can't give you enough accolades to express my feeling of aweness on these photos.  The kids are "at that age" when they don't want to get their pictures taken.  We had many fights that morning on the outfits and hair style choices, but you once again captured who they truly are at this age.  A thousand thank yous!

Christmas in the Spring

Every spring and fall we work on the new catalog for Bunnies by the Bay, www.bunniesbythebay.com. A few weeks ago we had baby mayhem at a rented studio space in Seattle. We photographed about 8 babies and 14 outfits in 4 hours. Madelyn and Sophia came along as our baby helpers. It was wild. Check out their Christmas outfit lineup. Super cuteness.

The day before Thanksgiving our dear, sweet, little Madelyn (aka MJ) was diagnosed with Leukemia. It was a whirlwind those first few months. Our biggest, warmest apologies to all of you we had to cancel on during November and December. But we are slowly… getting it back together. During the months of April and May Madelyn’s treatment will be the most intense to date and the doctors want her close to the hospital. So we will be living in Seattle. One of us will be up during the week and one of us will stay in the city for treatment appointments. Yes, it will be complicated, but we love KP Studios and being photographers. With Kimee’s help we will make this work!

Do you all know how lucky we are in Washington State? We have these amazing institutions treating and researching… they are saving my daughter’s life from the scary clutches of cancer. Take the time:

Don’t be shy
Please don’t be shy! We are going through an awful lot with Madelyn being sick, but we also need and love to work. It is good therapy for us to have a sense of normalcy – and that means photo shoots! KP Studios was just lucky enough that she happened to fall in love with a cool cat from Anacortes and has made the leap from sun to clouds. She will continue to work for her studio part-time and travel to southern California once a month. The rest of the time she is ours!!!! Dude. So cool.

KP Studios has so many exciting things to share! We are going to use this as a venue for showing you cool photos, letting you know fun things going on in the studio and reminding you of what’s around the bend.

As most of you are aware too, our personal life has been devastating lately. We thought this would also be a great way to give you mini-updates on Madelyn and how that correlates with our life as photographers. The life of Pediatric Cancer was definitely not in the 15 year plan, but this new, dramatic period is slowly becoming accustomed to by all four of us and it is forcing developments at KP Studios. For the better. (More on this to come).

Studio Update: 2011

Dear Friends,

We will, unfortunately, not be taking any wedding commissions for January - August 2011. We will not be accepting any new portrait clients until July 2011. The reason for this is a most devastating one. The day before Thanksgiving this year our little Madelyn, four years old, was diagnosed with Leukemia. Our life has been turned upside down and we need a little pause in work in order to support her to the best of our abilities. If you have a wedding in September or after this year, please do contact us. We will be missing our weddings, but feel it is not responsible for us to take any commissions. We do not yet know what the schedule of Madelyn's treatments will hold for us and she is our priority. If you are a current portrait or commercial client, please contact us as we usually know our schedule 2 weeks in advance and can make arrangements.

Please think of us in the coming months and if you have any needs we can help with starting in the summer do not hesitate to contact us.

Holiday Gifts...
It's holiday season at KP Studios! October and November is family and children commission time. I know our parents only want pictures of us and the kids for Christmas... I'm sure you're all the same. This is such a fun time for us. Hanging out with cool families. Seeing them goof around. Then making artwork for their walls and custom designing their Christmas cards. Mount Hood Bed and Breakfast was a beautiful setting for this wedding. Normally you can see Mt Hood in the background, but on this day, again, we ran into rain, rain, rain. It opened up just for the ceremony and the couple photos. Then it started to down pour during the reception...

Saturdays are work days for us, but when we don't have a wedding one of us stays home with the girls and one works. Today we did half days so when we "switched", Peter took a few moments to give MJ a "photography lesson." :)

Bunnies by the Bay... We just finished a few weeks of shooting for the new 2009 clothing catalog for Bunnies by the Bay. This was so enjoyable. Lots of babies, lots of cute clothes. We did a Combination Session with these cute blondies and their parents: some images in the studio and some around Old Town and the beach.

Lauren and Aron... Another enchanting wedding with amazing details. Lauren and Aron came from Cleveland for their destination wedding on Orcas Island. What an amazing day. Fun people, charming details, gorgeous view, intimate surroundings. By far one of our most fun events yet. Anyone who has Postal Service as their ring tone is WAY awesome in my book!

Two weeks ago we went to Winnipeg Manitoba (north of Minnesota in Canada) to see our good friend and fellow photographer Meghann Cruise. She married a really great guy, Travis Wahl; we were so honored to be a part of this event. We met Meghann in photography school over eight years ago and we love her to death. Thank you Meghann for having us as your photog's!

Jessica and John... Here is a wedding from a few weeks ago. What a fantastic group of people to spend the day with. The wedding was at Lakedale Resort on San Juan Island. This is a beautiful site: trees, lake, rustic-luxury accommodations. We stayed in one of their canvas tents. Can't wait to go back with Madelyn and Sophia. Great way to camp with kids! The reception was at San Juan Vineyard - another amazing site. Check out the images at the end of them running in the grass. LOVE it. The music was by Fidalgo Swing in Anacortes.

Fidalgo Dance Works:

So a couple weekends ago we did our annual "picture days" at the dance studio here in Anacortes. We do this for several reasons. Most importantly, these wonderful women (the teachers) help bring dance to our little community AND these kids are so stinkin' cute!! Our little Madelyn started attending last year and they asked us to help. We are so happy to! We get to see girls (and boys) at every age: from 3 years old to high school. We can watch how our two little girls will change (right before our eyes) in the next few years...

Listening to Cake today I was reminded that I haven't made a post for awhile. The connection? I have no idea... he, he.

Last week was busy. Lots of sessions here and in Portland. I'm going to post images from the Island Hospital Foundation's Gala of Hope, a high school Senior and a family from Portland. Enjoy!

Island Hospital Foundation's Gala of Hope 2009...
A Marti Grai themed auction to benefit the Island Hospital Foundation was last weekend. We donated our time and part of the procedes from print sales to the hospital. Here are a couple fun pictures... A big shout out to all the volunteers who made this night amazing. They raised close to $200,000 for the hospital.

Alayna. Isn't she beautiful? This sweet high school senior from Sedro Wooley was very easy to photograph. We had such a good time with her and her mother. We spent time in the studio and out at WA Park. Right after this shoot we hurried to get dressed, pack our strobes and head to the Gala of Hope.

The Anderman's...
We photographed their wedding on Peter and I's first annivesary. So let's see, gosh, over six years ago now. They were married in a beautiful Oregon winery and now they have this beautiful, spunky little four year old Ariel. LOVE the curls!

Shelley and her husband Rik are wonderful glass artists blowing glass right here in Skagit County. We started photographing their pieces last year and have just loved what they do with the medium. Photographing glass is always a challenge and one Peter loves.

Grace...
Ok, I swear we photograph things other than kids. Yesterday we photographed a house and today we photographed sculptures for an artist. BUT kids are just so much more FUN! I guess it has to do with having a three year old and a seven month old. This little girl was in our daughter Madelyn's "dance" class (heavy emphasis on the parenthesis). I had watched her for a while and knew she would be so amazing to photograph. I finally asked her sweet Mum Nicole if I could and wouldn't ya know Peter ended up doing the session. I got in on the finger and foot painting to show Grace what to do... and, yes, we let her paint all over our backdrop. When I talked to Nicole the next day she said she walked away excited for the pictures, sweaty and exhausted. Kind of like us after every kid session!

Nutrition Project website!
Peter and I are SO excited to announce our new website. As many of you know, we have been working on a project documenting indigenous peoples traditional foods with the Centre of Indigenous Peoples Nutrition and Environment. We received a grant to travel to 12 case study sites to document the study and in our free time (laugh, laugh) we have been producing films. The videos have been posted on a separate website which has just gone live. Please take a look! Peter has been producing these with our videographer and editor Jim Thompson.
